Is 100 Mbps enough for streaming?

What 100 Mbps carries, service by service

Each row is one figure from the service’s own help page, the basis in the page’s own word (a minimum where it says minimum, at least or required; a recommendation where it only recommends), and the streams column is 100 Mbps divided by that figure, whole streams only. Each figure carries the month we read it.

For Disney+, Hulu, Paramount+, Prime Video, FOX One and discovery+, we have not verified a published figure on the service’s own US page (checked Sep 2026), so this page quotes none for them. Spectrum’s 60 Mbps figure is for a whole connection, not one stream, so it is left out here. Every figure, including that one, is on the internet for streaming page with its source.

Example households against 100 Mbps

The 4 starting points from the household planner, each a plain sum of what runs at the same time: every 4K screen at 25 Mbps (4K), every HD (720p entry) screen at 5 Mbps, each activity at its publisher’s own figure, no multiplier.

What a speed test does not tell you

A speed test reads one device at one moment. What reaches a TV over WiFi in another room can be less, and the reading can change with the hour. The FCC measures speeds in the peak-use window, weeknights 7 to 11 PM. Test in that window on the device that streams, then wired at the router, and compare. The speed test keeps your readings by time of day. If a reading that should carry the stream still buffers, four questions separate the plan from the WiFi path, the device and the service.
