A speed test can pass while the stream buffers.
Our speed test reads one device for 10 seconds; a stream runs for hours, often on another device over WiFi. Both numbers are real, and they measure different links. The highest published minimum for one 4K stream is 25 Mbps, the figure HBO Max, Apple TV+ and ESPN each publish (read Sep 2026). The FCC measures speeds in the peak-use window, weeknights 7 to 11 PM.

My speed test passes but the stream still buffers. How can both be true?
Our speed test reads the connection at one device for 10 seconds, usually near the router. A stream runs for hours on a different device, often over WiFi in another room. Both numbers are real; they measure different links. The four questions above find which link differs.
Is it my WiFi or my internet plan?
Run the same test twice: once on the device that buffers, where it sits, and once on a laptop plugged into the router with an Ethernet cable. If the wired number is higher, the difference is the WiFi path to that device. If both are under what the house needs at the same time, the plan is short.
Why does it only buffer in the evening?
The FCC measures speeds in the peak-use window, weeknights 7 to 11 PM. Test in that window and again in the afternoon; two readings show whether your connection changes with the hour.
How much speed does one stream need?
One 4K stream: 25 Mbps (4K), the highest published minimum (HBO Max, Apple TV+ and ESPN). One HD stream (720p entry): 5 Mbps, the minimum HBO Max, ESPN and ViX each publish. Recommendations run higher: HBO Max recommends 50 Mbps for 4K. Spectrum's own guide counts 20 Mbps per 4K viewer and 60 Mbps for three at once. Other screens in the house share the number; the household planner adds them up.
Could it be the service and not my connection?
If every device in the house struggles on one service and the others play, the connection is carrying the other services. Start at that service's own help page; where a service publishes a speed figure, the questions above link to it. For Disney+, Hulu, Paramount+, Prime Video, FOX One and discovery+, we have not verified a published figure, so this page quotes none for them.

If the readings say the plan is short
Two wired readings under what the house needs at the same time point at the plan. The household planner sums the screens at the services’ published figures and names the smallest Spectrum Internet plan offered everywhere that clears the sum. Before any of that, take the readings: the speed test measures what reaches the device you run it on, keeps your tests by time of day, and says how many screens the number carries.
